I designed and enhanced featured items into the monthly covers. I provided several variations for the CMO to decide upon each month. This could be challenging due to either a multitude of beautiful imagery or occasionally from a lack of intriguing options. It was crucial to create something that engaged with the reader from the stand.

It was my role to prepare, package and send our magazine out to print each month. Although the steps sound simple, anyone in the print industry knows that is not always the case. Our magazine was sponsored primarily by advertisments created for off-base clientele, making communication complicated in the least, but always rewarding. Overseeing a team of five other designers, it was up to me timelines and deadlines were followed.

Typical Process

Although not new to you I’m sure, I figured I would include the monthly run-down of the magazine process we followed (we can compare notes).

  • The content of our magazine would stem from the writing department, the sponsorship department, or a combination of the two. We featured things to do, see, experience, taste and buy in both Okinawa and Japan.

  • I assigned Graphic Artists to their roles each month. As the artist, we usually had pretty free rein for aesthetics, although it always centered around content (written or photographed).

  • Ensuring a beautiful and correct print job is easier said than done. I was privileged to be able to work closely with the printer to see that our team’s vision was brought to life.
